Sock it to me! - How I designed my new line of socks!
Emlynn JonesI can't tell you how long I've wanted to add socks to my store! I've started and stopped this project several times, but a few months ago I finally decided to make my long-awaited dream a reality.
As with every new product line, the first task was to find a manufacturer. I searched the web and finally settled on a company I liked.
With someone to work with, the next task was to design the socks. But what theme should I use? Well, I went with my tried and true, customer favorites, we’re talking about the Milky Tomato Trinity of, Star Babies, Clowns, and Teeth. 🙂
This was my first time designing apparel like this. I had done shirts and hoodies, but those were much simpler, just laying out images on the existing apparel. This time I had a lot more to take into account, like the thread color, the pattern wrapping around correctly, etc.
The manufacturer sent me a template to use for all of my designs:
Using the template I then came up with the following designs to get things started:
(Note the design images have been pixelated on purpose.. You can see the crisp images in the sample photos below! :) )
That was the easy part! Next came the revisions. First, we had to work on setting each color for the design:
Next, I reviewed the thread samples to make sure I got the exact colors I envisioned:
Finally, I had to work out the bugs! What happens when designs don’t match where the sock ends meet?
But with patience and revisions, I worked through each step and was so excited to see the pictures of the samples they had made:
They looked amazing, but were the socks good quality? I couldn’t tell from the pictures. They sure looked great, but I’ve been disappointed by thin socks in the past so the last step was to have them ship samples to me. The waiting was so hard! The day came and my socks arrived and I was SO happy to find that they not only were good quality, thick socks, they also looked so great! So bright and fun!!!
