How to use jump rings to make adjustments on keychains and earrings!
Emlynn JonesSometimes people reach out to inquire about doing small repairs or making adjustments on their keychains or earrings; like changing a clasp. Learning about jump rings and how to replace/repair them can help.
What is a jump ring?
A jump ring is a small, circular piece of wire with a gap that allows it to open and close, used to connect different jewelry components like charms, pendants, and clasps to a necklace, bracelet, or earring. They are actually designed to break under stress in order to protect the jewelry and/or wearer. Over time, under the stress of daily use, jump rings may slowly come open and so require some maintenance to keep them secure.Â
Luckily, jump rings are cheap and readily available at any craft store or online. One bag of jump rings will last you a lifetime!
How to replace/repair a jump ring:
- Grasp the ring: Hold the jump ring firmly with two pairs of pliers, ensuring one pair is on each side of the gap.
- Twist open: Instead of pulling the ring apart side-to-side, twist the pliers in opposite directions, like turning a doorknob, to open the ring and create a small gap.
- Add components: Slide your jewelry components, such as a pendant or charm, onto the open jump ring.
- Twist closed: With the components in place, twist the jump ring back to its circular shape, making sure the ends meet to form a strong connection.
